1. These
are the magic years of Amedeo Bocchi. In the sunlit atmosphere of Villa Strohl-Fern
in Rome where the artist lived from 1915 until his death in 1976, one of his
masterpieces was created: Breakfast
scene, 1919.
The original
idea is in a sketch with the same title (see comparison), the setting is in
the garden with the three women seated at the table. In the final painting
there is a much closer viewpoint and the figures stand out against the background,
emphasized by the luminous barrier, green and yellow, behind them. The flower
vase has also been moved, as though to compensate with its bright colors for
the prodigious play of white of the tablecloth and dresses. The entire work
resolves itself into an effective abstraction in which the pictorial play
is entirely sustained by light and color.
